Adrien Manglard,

Adrien Manglard lernte im Atelier des Holländers Adrien van der Cabel in Frankreich. 1715 zog er jedoch für immer nach Rom. In Italien malte er nicht nur Landschaften und klassizistisch inspirierte Historiengemälde, sondern wurde bald zu einem der bedeutendsten europäischen Marinemaler des 18. Jahrhunderts und als solcher Lehrer von Claude-Joseph Vernet. Manglard hatte, neben Hafenszenen und maritimen Landschaften, eine Vorliebe für Stürme und Schiffbrüche, wie auch auf unserem Bild zu sehen ist. Hier erkennt man im Vordergrund die typischen, dicht gedrängten Figuren in den Rettungsbooten, in ihrem Versuch, die Felsenküste zu erreichen. Die Wellen brechen sich an den Klippen, am Himmel türmen sich düstere Wolken, während das Segelschiff sich immer tiefer dem Abgrund zuneigt. Das hier dargestellte Motiv, mit ähnlichem figurativen Repertoire und logischer Aufteilung, findet man in vielen authentischen Gemälden Manglards wieder, wie zum Beispiel in den Werken im Musée d’Art et d’Archéologie in Guéret, in der Palazzina Boncompagni-Ludovisi in Rom und im Palazzo Ducale in Colorno in der Nähe von Parma. Adrien Manglard trained in the workshop of the Dutch artist Adrien van der Cabel in France. However, in 1715 he moved to Rome for good. In Italy he soon became one of the most important European Maritime painters of the 18th century and as such, teacher of Claude-Joseph Vernet. Manglard had, apart from port scenes and maritime landscapes, a preference for storms and shipwrecks, as can be seen in the present painting. The depicted subject, with similar figural repertoire and logical arrangement can be found in many authentic works by Manglard, for example in the works at the Musée d’Art ed de Archéologie in Guéret, at the Palazzina Boncompagni-Ludovisi in Rome and the Palazzo Ducale in Colorno near Parma.
