Paolo de San Leocadio,

Malerei auf Goldgrund. In den 70er Jahren des 15. Jahrhunderts war Paolo da San Leocadio Schüler von Bono da Ferrara und Ercole de Roberti in Ferrara. 1472 ging er mit Kardinal Rodrigo Borgia, dem zukünftigen Papst Alexander VI, nach Spanien. Von nun an machte er ausschließlich dort Karriere und brachte den italienischen Renaissance-Einfluss nach Spanien. Dies wird vor allem bei der Betrachtung der von ihm geschaffenen Fresken in der Kathedrale von Valencia deutlich. Diese Fresken gehören zu den bedeutendsten in Spanien in der zweiten Hälfte des 15. Jahrhunderts geschaffenen Werken von Paolo da San Leocadio. Beachtenswert sind auch die „Madonna del Cavaliere di Montesa“ (Museo del Prado, Madrid), „Madonna col Bambino e San Giovannino“ (Museo de Bellas Artes, Valencia) und der „Compianto sul Cristo morto“ (Museu Nacional de Catalunya, Barcelona).
Die beiden vorliegenden hervorragenden Werke gehörten sehr wahrscheinlich zu einem Flügelaltar, ähnlich dem Retablo del Salvador, den Leocadio zwischen 1495 und 1500 für die Kirche San Jaime in Villarreal schuf. Außer den offensichtlichen stilistischen Analogien findet man an diesem Monumentalwerk die gleichen mit Graviernadel auf Goldgrund erstellten Dekorationen wieder; ebenso verziert ist auch der „Salvatore con calice e ostia“ (Heiland mit Kelch und Hostie) im Nationalmuseum in Posen. Painting on gold-ground. In the 1470s Paolo da San Leocadio was a pupil of Bono da Ferrara and Ercole de Roberti in Ferrara. In 1472 he went to Spain with Cardinal Rodrigo Borgia, the future Pope Alexander VI. From then on he only pursued his career there and brought the Italian Renaissance influence to Spain. This is particularly apparent on reflection of the frescos created by him at the Cathedral of Valencia. The two magnificent works at hand belonged in all probability to a winged altar, similar to the “Retablo del Salvador”, which Leocadio created between 1495 and 1500 for the San Jaime Church in Villarreal. Apart from the obvious stylistic analogies, the same decorations of engraving stylus on gold-ground can be found on this monumental work; the “Salvatore con calice e ostia” (The Saviour with cup and eucharistic bread) at the National Museum in Posen is also similarly decorated.
