Die Darstellung zeigt die Breitansicht des Palazzo mit der zentral zuführenden Gigantentreppe, an deren oberen Absatz die Dogenkrönung stattfindet. Die sämtlichen Kleriker rot gekleidet, zwei halten über dem Haupt des Dogen die mützenförmige Krone. Zuschauer in sämtlichen Fenstern und in den Loggien, vor allem dicht gedrängt im Vordergund, dazwischen Wachen mit Lanzen.
Das Gemälde geht auf ein Werk von Francesco Guardi (1712-1793) von 1775 zurück, wiewohl das Ereignis auch durch Grafiken von Giambattista Brustolon, nach der Gemäldevorlage von Canaletto verbreitet waren.
Die Expertise von Filippo Pedrocco hat zu vorliegendem Bild aufgrund stilistischer Merkmale den Namen Antonio Joli zur Diskussion gestellt, obschon Joli meistenteils in Rom gewirkt hat, sich jedoch mit seiner Familie in Venedig niederließ. Vor allem die Gestaltung und die stilistische Wiedergabe der zahlreichen Figuren weisen laut Pedrocco auf Joli hin, vergleichbar mit dessen Werk „Veduta del cortile di Palazzo Ducale in occasione del ingresso del legato apostolico Antonio Branciforti Colonna“ das sich in der Gallery of Arts in Washington befindet. The painting is based on the work by Francesco Guardi (1712–1793) from 1775, although the event was also recorded in graphics created by Giambattista Breastonon, based on a painting by Canaletto. In his report, Filippo Pedrocco suggests Antonio Joli for discussion because of stylistic characteristics, although Joli worked mostly in Rome but settled in Venice with his family. According to Pedrocco, it is particularly the design and stylistic rendering of the many figures that point to Joli, comparable to his “Veduta del cortile di Palazzo Ducale in occasione del ingresso del legato apostolico Antonio Branciforti Colonna”, which is held at the Gallery of Arts in Washington.
