Baule-Figur im Sakassou-Stil

Hartholz, geschnitzt mit delikater Krustenpatina, diese partiell abgelöst. Erst wurden diese Skulpturen als vom Meister von Sakassou bezeichnet, nach einem Dorf, wo solche Skulpturen gefunden wurden. In Les Maîtres de la sculpture de Côte d’Ivoire von 2015 schlug Bernard de Grunne den Namen „Der Meister von Essankro und seine Werkstatt“ vor, basierend auf neuen Informationen, die Susan Vogel vor Ort erhalten hatte.
Figuren in diesem Stil sind „durch eine lange, geschmeidige Linie gekennzeichnet, der Körper hat einen weichen, abgerundeten Bauch, das Gesicht ist konkav und herzförmig mit großen runden Augen. Die eigenwillige Behandlung des Unterschenkels ist ein leicht zu erkennendes Merkmal: der Knöchel befindet sich meist hinter dem Schwerpunkt, weit hinter dem Knie, und die Knöchel sind klein, eng zusammengezogen, was der Figur Spannung und eine Art Auftrieb von der hohen, engen, tief gerippten Basis gibt“ (Vogel, a.a.O., S. 51). Bernard de Grunne betrachtet diesen Stil als eine der vollendetsten Leistungen der Baule-Kunst.

Baule figure in Sakassou-style

Height: 47.5 cm.
Ivory Coast, probably late 19th century.

Hardwood; carved with delicate encrusted patina, partially loose. Initially, these sculptures were attributed to a master from Sakassou, after a village, where such sculptures were found. In the publication
Les Maîtres de la sculpture de Côte d’Ivoire from 2015, Bernard de Grunne suggested the name “the master of Essankro and his workshop”, based on new information uncovered locally by Susan Vogel. Figures in this style are characterized by “a long, smooth line, the body has a soft, rounded stomach, the face is concave and heart-shaped with large round eyes. The unconventional execution of the lower leg is an easily recognizable feature: the ankles is usually placed behind the centre of gravity, far behind the knee and the ankles are small and slightly contracted, which gives the figure tension and a kind of buoyancy from the tall, narrow and deeply grooved base.” (see below Vogel, p. 51). Bernard de Grunne considers this style as one of the most accomplished achievements of Baule art.
