Francesco Sasso
1720 - 1776 Madrid, zug.

Der gebürtige Genuese Francesco Sasso siedelte 1753 nach Madrid über, wo er von der Königinmutter Isabel de Farnesio protegiert wurde. Neben seinen Allegorien und religiösen Motiven schuf er auch Genrebilder, von denen sich einige im Prado erhalten haben. Hier wird ein kleinwüchsiger Mann in Lumpen mit einer Pfeife und starrem Blick gezeigt, zu seinen Füßen einige Gefäße, Wurzelgemüse und ein Brotstück.

Don Luis de Borbon y Farnesio, Arenas, Mosquera Palace, 1785 (Inventarnummer 13).
Durch Erbschaft an seine Witwe, Maria Teresa Vallabriga y Rozas, Zaragoza, bis 1820.
Majorat de Chinchón, Boadilla del Monte Palace, sein Zeichen, zwei C‘s unter einer Krone, sichtbar in der unteren linken Ecke des Gemäldes (Inventar von 1826, im Vorraum der Damen: „Ein Gemälde mit einem zerlumpten Zweg in vergoldetem Rahmen von mehr als fünf Kubikmeter Höhe“). Das Gemälde erscheint auch in den Inventaren von 1847 und 1888 (Nr. 153; „Piano nobile, erster Raum rechts, Sasso, Neapolitaner, ein Zwerg“.

Majorat de Chinchón, Boadilla del Monte Palace, his mark of two C under a crown appearing in the lower left corner of the painting (1826 inventory, in the antechamber of the Dames :” A painting with a Ragged Dwarf, in gilt frame, of more than five cuartos of height”). The painting appears also in the inventories of 1847 and 1888 (no. 153; “Piano nobile, first room, to the right, Sasso, Neapolitan, a Dwarf”).

The painting was certainly commissioned by the Infante of Spain don Luis de Borbon (1727-1783), brother of King Charles III, who owned another fifteen canvases by the same artist, showing beggars and other people from the street.
