(13916012) (1) (13)

FESTIVITIES AT THE CROSSBOW COMPETITION
Oil on canvas. Relined.
122.4 x 91.6 cm.
Jan Jozef Horemans the Younger, to whom the painting is attributed by means of a name plaque, created festive group paintings, but there are details which suggest the painter Jan Baptist Monteyne such as certain figures and their gestures, which can be found in similar paintings by him. A lady with her hand pointing to the right in the lower left can be found in a similar place in a painting that is documented at the RKD under no. 20117, where there is also a similar portico architecture and the slender tree with its curved trunk and sparse foliage. Under no. 58292 the bouquet of spring flowers can be found on the table, which is brought on a plate by a servant in the present painting.
