Das Portrait zeigt den Mann im Brustbildnis, in ähnlicher Auffassung wie das Gemälde des del Cossa „Mann mit einem Ring“, das um 1472-1477 entstand und sich im Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid befindet. Der Zeit und dem Stil der Frührenaissance entsprechend ist die Figur vor einer Landschaft im Hintergrund gezeigt. Hier verläuft ein Fluss unterhalb einer Anhöhe mit Gebäuden. Es ist anzunehmen, dass es sich hierbei um eine Gegend handelt, die mit dem Dargestellten in engem Bezug steht.
Bei der Suche nach dem Maler des Bildes wurden bereits mehrere Vorschläge gemacht. Das gravierte Namensschild auf dem Rahmen nennt den Venezianer Vittore Carpaccio, wogegen jedoch einige Kriterien sprechen, wie Patricia Fortini Brown mitteilt. Zur Diskussion stünde auch Ercole de Roberti aus Ferrara, der seinen Bildnissen jedoch zumeist einen einfarbigen Hintergrund gab. Letztliche Aussage zu dem Bild galt dem Kreis des Francesco del Cossa (Amadore Ponella, laut gegebenem Schreiben). A.R.

The present half-length portrait features a similar composition to Del Cossa’s painting titled Man with a Ring, which was created ca. 1472 - 1477 and is held at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museo Nacional in Madrid
