Die Gestaltung folgt dem seinerzeit berühmt gewordenen Gemälde von Géróme, das im Salon von 1864 ausgestellt wurde. Frühe, seltene Ausführung. A.R.
Anmerkung:
Mercié studierte bei Alexandre Falguière und François Jouffroy an der École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, 18-jährig gewann er 1868 den Grand Prix de Rome. Seine ersten Erfolge waren die Skulpturen des David (1872) und Kriegerdenkmal Gloria Victis (1874). Werke seiner Hand in zahlreichen Museen, wie Paris (Musée d'Orsay, Louvre), Toulouse, London, Washigton u.a.
