Pompeo Girolamo Batoni,

Die Originalfassung des Gemäldes in den Maßen 120 x 90 cm (Inv.Nr. 1979.20) entstand um 1745 und befindet sich im Museum für Schöne Künste in Montreal. Es ist eine der bedeutendsten allegorischen Darstellungen Batonis. Der Bildgedanke geht auf den Psalm 85,10 zurück. Gezeigt sind zwei weibliche Gestalten: Die junge Frau im Halbakt mit reinweißem Umhang – sie ist als die Wahrheit zu sehen – hält eine Scheibe der Sonnenfinsternis hoch. Daneben kniet eine in Rot und Blau gekleidete junge Frau, die Allegorie für die Barmherzigkeit, die von der Wahrheit offensichtlich Hilfe erhofft. Während diese als irdisches Wesen gezeigt ist, schwebt die „Wahrheit“ auf Wolken. Links unten ist ein Pelikan ins Bild gesetzt, Symbol für Nächstenliebe. Die Darstellung lässt noch etliche Interpretationen zu. Das Gemälde zeigt eine hohe Malqualität, die eine Zuordnung in den Werkstattkreis rechtfertigt.

The original version of the painting, measuring 120 x 90 cm, was created in 1745 and is held at the Museum of Fine Arts in Montreal. It is one of Batoni’s most important allegorical representations. The painting exhibits a high quality of execution, justifying its attribution to an artist from the workshop.
