In einer düster-dramatischen Szenerie, durchzogen von starkem Chiaroscuro, erscheint Kleopatra im Moment nach ihrem Tod. Halb entblößt und in ein Tuch gehüllt, sinkt ihr Körper kraftlos zur Seite, während ihre treue Dienerin ihren Kopf stützt. Die Schlange, Sinnbild ihres selbstgewählten Endes, windet sich mit vorgestreckter Zunge noch über ihre Hand. Das fahle, bereits erbleichte Inkarnat lässt die erloschene Lebenswärme spürbar werden. Aus dem Halbdunkel des Hintergrunds tritt eine Magd hervor, stumme Zeugin des Geschehens. Licht, Haltung und Ausdruck verdichten sich zu einem eindringlichen Sinnbild barocker Dramatik und stiller Erhabenheit. (1462253) (17)
