Die Ansicht ist großformatig angelegt. In betontem Breitformat ist ein weiter Blickwinkel vom Sestiere-Ufer über die fern liegenden Gebäude am Kanalauslauf – bis hin zur rechtsstehenden Kuppelkirche geboten. Dieser grandiose Prospekt ist vom hellen blauen Himmel überwölbt, aufgelichtet durch fiedrige Wolken. Vereinzelt ziehen Gondeln ihre Bahnen, am Ufer und in der Ferne leuchten Segelschiffe auf. Das Museum Ca‘Rezzonico, Venedig, veranstaltete erstmals eine Ausstellung, die dem Maler mit 45 seiner Werke gewidmet ist. Pietro war Neffe von Canaletto (1697–1768) und der jüngere Bruder des Bernardo Bellotto (1721–1780). Seine Stellung im Verhältnis zu den bedeutenden Vedutisten wurde damit erstmals beleuchtet.
