Vor abgedunkeltem Fond die Bettstatt des Holofernes, auf der diesem der Kopf vom Rumpf separiert wird. Judith führt das elegant verzierte Schwert mit dem vergoldeten Knauf. Die elegante Spitze ihres Untergewandes und das purpurne Obergewand stehen in Kontrast zur Kleidung ihrer Begleiterin. Die Tötung des Holofernes wird im Buch Judith des Alten Testaments berichtet (Jdt 10 – 13). Nach etlichem Brandschatzen und Morden im gesamten Vorderen Orient gelangt Holofernes nach Betulia, wo es Judith gelingt, ihn und sein Gefolge in ein Gelage zu verwickeln. Sie und ihre Magd nutzen seine Trunkenheit aus und enthaupten ihn. Gemäß den aus New Orleans und London überlieferten Informationen wurde das Gemälde im April 2003 von Dr. Sandro Bellesi anhand einer Fotografie untersucht und die Zuschreibung an den genannten Künstler vorgeschlagen.
