Das Werk, bis vor kurzem in einer bedeutenden privaten Sammlung in Mantua, bisher jedoch unveröffentlicht, zeigt den jungen frühchristlichen Märtyrer, kaum mehr als einen Jugendlichen, angelehnt an eine Marmorsäule und von vier Pfeilen durchbohrt. Er steht auf einem gefliesten Boden, umgeben von einer niedrigen Mauer, offen zum Himmel. Er richtet seinen Blick auf den Betrachter, genauer gesagt auf den Gläubigen, für den er als heiliger Fürsprecher und Schutzpatron gegen die stets präsente Pest dienen sollte. Ursprünglich könnte die Tafel den rechten Flügel eines kleinen Triptychons gebildet haben, wahrscheinlicher ist jedoch – aufgrund der zentralisierten Perspektive – dass sie ein eigenständiges Bild war, vielleicht für den häuslichen Bereich und nicht für eine Kirche. Das Werk steht in der Tradition der venezianischen Malerei des Quattrocento, beeinflusst von Giovanni Bellini (1430 – 1516) und Cima da Conegliano (1459 – 1517/18), ist aber stilistisch eigenständig und stammt nicht aus deren Werkstatt. Die Figuren zeichnen sich durch feine Linienführung, leuchtende Farbigkeit und sensibel gestaltete Details aus. Das Werk wird dem Maler, Kupferstecher und Glasfensterdesigner Jérôme Mocetto zugeschrieben. Vergleichbare Werke von Mocetto sind u. a. „Ritratto di fanciullo“ (Modena), die „Vergine col Bambino“ (Vicenza), die „Allegoria dell’Immacolata Concezione“ (Maastricht) und das Triptychon in der Kapelle San Biagio in Verona. Stilistische Parallelen lassen eine Entstehung um ca. 1517 für den hier gezeigten San Sebastiano vermuten.

Originally, the panel may have formed the right wing of a small triptych. However, due to the centralized perspective, it is more probably that it was a standalone painting, perhaps intended for a private home rather than a church. The work belongs to the tradition of Venetian painting of the Quattrocento, influenced by Giovanni Bellini (1430 – 1516) and Cima da Conegliano (1459 – 1517/18). However, it is stylistically independent and does not originate from their workshops. The work is attributed to the painter, engraver, and stained-glass designer Jérôme Mocetto. Comparable works by Mocetto include Portrait of a Boy (Modena), Virgin and Child (Vicenza), Allegory of the Immaculate Conception (Maastricht), and the triptych in the Chapel of San Biagio in Verona. Stylistic similarities suggest a creation date of ca. 1517 for the present painting.
