Der Maler war Schüler von Jan Willem Pienemann (1779 – 1853) und wurde 1845 Mitglied der Königlichen Akademie in Amsterdam. Große Bekanntheit erlangte er durch seine meist winterlichen Landschaften. Er war Lehrer seines Sohnes Jacob Jan Coenraad (1837 – 1922); ein weiterer Sohn, Johannes Franciscus (1853 – 1894) schuf überwiegend Stadtveduten. (14613613) (11)
