Die Szene zeigt die Begegnung Jesu mit einer Samariterin. Christus wendet sich der Frau zu, zu ihren Füßen ein Hund – Symbol für Treue, Gesellschaft oder in manchen Deutungen als heidnisches Element in die christliche Szene eingefügt. Im Hintergrund zwei Männer, von denen der eine den anderen stützt, getrennt durch eine Architekturkulisse; darüber leuchtet ein Himmel in Gelb- und Rottönen, der die hereinbrechende Dunkelheit durchbricht und die Begegnung dramatisch beleuchtet.
