Die Darstellung nimmt Bezug auf die Apostelgeschichte 12, 5-12. Durch ein Wunder wird der Heilige Petrus von einem Engel aus dem Kerker gerettet, während seine Bewacher schlafen. Auf dem Gemälde ist in einem großen gewölbten Raum der Heilige Petrus in Begleitung eines weiß gekleideten Engels zu sehen, von dem er zum Ausgang über eine Treppe geführt wird. Auf den unteren Stufen sitzend ein schlafender Soldat, beleuchtet durch eine seitlich von ihm an einem Wandpfeiler hängende Kerze. Malerei mit starkem Hell-Dunkel-Kontrast; das Motiv ist mehrfach im Werk des Künstlers zu finden. (14621711) (18)
