Detaillierte Wiedergabe des Canal Grande mit der Santa Maria della Salute und ihrer imposanten Kuppel, dem Punto della Dogana, an den Kanal grenzenden Palazzi sowie zahlreichen Gondeln und Schiffen.
Der Maler war Sohn des Carlo Grubacs (1812/40–1870), der in Venedig wirkte. Giovanni Grubacs griff die Tradition der venezianischen Vedutenmalerei nach den Vorbildern der herausragendsten Vertreter dieser Gattung, wie Canaletto (1697–1768) und Francesco Guardi (1712–1793) wieder auf, um ein neues Interesse für dieses Genre zu wecken. Seine meist großformatigen Bilder widmen sich thematisch den bekanntesten Ansichten der Lagunenstadt und fassen die Leistungen der Vorbilder in durchdachten Neudarstellungen in feindetaillierter Malweise zusammen.
