(†) (12312825) (10)

Georges Rouault,

ARLEQUIN, 1948Oil on canvas.
40 x 32 cm.

Certificate by the Fondation Georges Rouault.

This accumulation of almost abstract, geometric shapes is not any person. In this mosaic-like composition, the viewer can make out Harlequin, a key figure from the Commedia dell’Arte. The painting’s composition is also reminiscent of stained-glass window art in churches, that Rouault was trained in, and makes reference to holy depictions of saints or angels. (†)
