Der Blick auf den Dogenpalast, die beiden bekannten Säulen und die nach hinten ziehende Häuserfassade, ist aus leicht erhöhter Perspektive vom Canal Grande aus zu sehen, die anliegenden und abfahrenden Gondeln im Vordergrund.
Der Künstler unternahm nach seinem erfolgreichen Studium der Architektur mehrere Studienreisen nach Italien zwischen 1845 und 1848 und machte die Malerei schließlich zu seinem Beruf. In Venedig fand er Inspiration für seine Werke, insbesondere Stillleben, Portraits und Landschaftsbilder. Er kann der Schule von Barbizon zugerechnet werden. 1857 ernannte ihn die französische Regierung zum Ritter der Ehrenlegion. (1471717) (13)
