Im weit nach hinten ziehenden, verschneiten Gelände: links stehende Gebäude sowie Staffagefiguren auf dem zugefrorenen Fluss. Venneman war Schüler des Antwerpener Malers Ferdinand de Braekeleer (1792 – 1883), der sich überwiegend dem Genre gewidmet hatte, beide waren beeinflusst von Malern wie Teniers oder Brouwer.
