Der französische Maler wird dem Kreis der Fauves zugeordnet. Er ging 1896 nach Paris und studierte dort im Atelier von Gustave Moreau (1826–1898), wo er auch Albert Marquet (1875–1947) kennenlernte. 1902 machte er die Bekanntschaft mit Paul Cézanne (1839–1906). Er schloss sich den Fauves zwar an, war aber kein überzeugter Fauvist.
