Der vor allem auch für seine Genrebilder so berühmt gewordene Meister schuf nicht wenige Werke religiöser Thematik, darunter auch Darstellungen der Madonna mit dem Kind, wie etwa in den Staatlichen Kunstsammlungen Dresden (um 1670), die „Jungfrau des Rosenkranzes“ im Prado Madrid, die „Madonna mit Kind“ im Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, oder auch die Madonna Lactans. Stets gilt Murillos hauptsächliches Interesse der Schönheit des Madonnengesichts, wie dies auch hier in der jungen betenden Maria deutlich wird.
In der beiliegenden Expertise wird ein Entstehungsjahr nicht genannt; jedoch weist der Malstil noch in eine frühere Schaffensphase, vergleichbar mit Werken noch vor der Hinwendung zu dem in späteren Bildern ausgeprägten Sfumato. Das Gemälde zeigt also noch den früheren Tenebroso-Stil aus den 1640er-Jahren. Die Malweise des Alonso Cano (1601 – 1667) hat Murillos früheres Schaffen beeinflusst, auch dessen Caravaggismus ist hier noch festzustellen.

Murillo soll 1642 in Madrid studiert haben, als auch seine „Jungfrau mit dem Rosenkranz“ entstand. Erst 1645/46 hatte er seinen großen Durchbruch mit elf großformatigen Bildern für den Kreuzgang des Klosters des Heiligen Franziskus in Sevilla. Aus Anlass seines 400. Geburtstages fand in Sevilla 2017/2018 das „Murillo-Jahr“ statt, mit Ausstellungen und einem internationalen Kongress.

THE VIRGIN MARY WITH FOLDED HANDS

The master, who became particularly renowned for his genre paintings, also created a considerable number of works with religious subjects, including depictions of the Madonna and Child, such as the one in the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (ca. 1670), the Virgin of the Rosary in the Prado Museum, Madrid, and the Madonna and Child in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. Murillo’s primary interest always lay in the beauty of the Madonna’s face, as is clear here in the young, praying Mary. The accompanying expert’s report does not specify a date of creation; however, the painting style suggests an earlier period, comparable to works preceding his adoption of the sfumato technique so prominent in his later paintings. The painting thus still displays the tenebrist style characteristic of 1640s.
