Selbst für Antonio Tempesta, der für seine Schlachtengetümmel bekannt war, ein besonders detailreiches Gemälde mit einer großen Vielzahl von teils berittenen Personen, welche polychrom dargestellt sind und sich in verschiedenen Lagen und Höhen des Gemäldes aufhalten und dicht gedrängt eine Schlacht ausführen. Painter and engraver, active under Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574) painting the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence, furthermore he painted frescoes at the Vatican.

The Bible story according to The Book of Exodus, 17:8-13 is depicted between mountain ranges. Even for Antonio Tempesta, who was renowned for his crowded battle scenes, this is a painting especially rich in detail with a great variety of figures, some of which are mounted on horseback.
