Die Darstellung zeigt den Moment, in dem die Tochter des Pharaos den kleinen Moses im Schilf entdeckt. In leuchtendem Kolorit, vor dunklem Hintergrund und mit lebendiger Bewegung inszeniert, verbindet das Werk biblische Erzählung mit der emotionalen Ausdruckskraft des venezianischen Spätbarock.
Der Maler war Schüler von Sebastiano Mazzoni (um 1611 – 1678). 1676 erhielt er den Auftrag, den Dogen Niccolò Sagredo (1606 – 1676) zu portraitieren, und wurde 1681 vom Dogen mit dem Titel eines Cavalieri ausgezeichnet. Einer Legende zufolge musste er aus Venedig fliehen, nachdem er den Dogen mit Eselsohren dargestellt hatte. Erst 1700 kehrte er in die Stadt zurück, wo er eine Werkstatt eröffnete und 1708 der Malergilde beitrat. (1462203) (17)
