Bronze; gegossen und mittelbraun patiniert. Auf einer hohen Rundplinthe der stehende Damenakt im Kontrapost mit erhobenen Armen und geneigtem Kopf. Bereits in den 1860er-Jahren entstand die Idee, Jean-Léon Gérômes Gemälde „Phryne vor dem Areopag“ in eine plastische Form zu übertragen – noch bevor der Künstler selbst 1878 zur Bildhauerei fand. Adolphe Goupil, Gérômes Schwager und Verleger, beauftragte den Bildhauer Alexandre Falguière mit der Umsetzung. Als Vorlage dienten neben dem Gemälde auch Studien und Fotografien des Aktmodells Marie-Christine Leroux. Das Gemälde zeigte die berühmte Hetäre Phryne während ihres Gerichtsprozesses im antiken Athen. Als ihr Verteidiger sie im entscheidenden Moment entblößt, beeindruckt ihre Schönheit die Richter so sehr, dass sie von einer Verurteilung absehen. Gérômes Darstellung, 1861 im Pariser Salon gezeigt, sorgte für Aufsehen: Die entblößte, aber schamhaft abwehrende Phryne wurde sowohl wegen ihres Realismus als auch ihrer Modernität kritisiert – selbst Émile Zola zeigte sich irritiert. Die Skulptur hingegen verzichtet auf den moralischen Spannungsbogen und betont allein die idealisierte Schönheit der Figur – ganz im Sinne klassischer Aktkunst.

Bronze; cast with mid-brown patina. As early as the 1860s, the idea emerged to translate Jean-Léon Gérôme’s painting Phryne before the Areopagus into sculpture – well before the artist himself turned to the medium in 1878.
Adolphe Goupil, Gérôme’s brother-in-law and publisher, commissioned the sculptor Alexandre Falguière to create the work. In addition to the painting, studies and photographs of the nude model Marie-Christine Leroux served as source material.
