Albert Marquet
1875 Bordeaux – 1947 Paris

LES JOUTES A SETE, around 1924

Oil on canvasboard.
33 x 41 cm.
Signed lower left.

An exemplary work, creation date around 1924. The painting can be dated on the basis of the Indian ink pen drawing “Les Quais à Sète”, which is preserved by the Musée Paul Valéry, Sète. It shows a nearly identical view from above down on the quays. In contrast to the drawing, the harbour bridge is crowded by many pedestrians.

Albert Marquet moved to Paris at the early age of 15 to receive his artistic training. In 1890, he met Henri Matisse with whom he attended Gustave Moreau’s art class. Matisse and Marquet stayed friends for their whole lives. Matisse as well as Fauves’ influence – Marquet was one of the co-founders – led him to the usage of intense colours in his early years, while his later oeuvre is characterized by differentiated damp nuances.
