Provenienz:
Thomas Jefferson Bryan (1802 - 1870), New York.
The New-York Historical Society, New York.
Auktion Sotheby's, New York, 9. Oktober 1980, Lot 71 (als alte Kopie nach Albrecht Bouts).
Auktion Sotheby's, Mailand, 17.

Flemish master of the second quarter of the 16th century

JOSEPH IN ADORATION OF THE VIRGIN MARY

Oil on panel. Parquetted.
43.5 x 42.5 cm.
Old red inventory number as well as stencilled inventory number "B122", furthermore residual catalogue label with the same number.

Based on a New Testament story from the Book of Matthew, Joseph is depicted kneeling in adoration of the pregnant Mary after having an angel's vision. Varying from the Bible's story the vision is depicted in the background on the left. The figures are painted into an elegant loggia with columns. Mary stands with her hands folded over her middle, behind her two floating angels hold a brocade cloth. Fine craquelure, little colour transparency. Signs of old restoration and touch ups. Overall, the painting is in a good to very good condition appropriate of its age. Face and hands of the virgin restored.

Provenance:
Thomas Jefferson Bryan (1802 - 1870), New York. On 2 April 1867 donated to the The New-York Historical Society, New York as one of 381 paintings.
Sotheby's Auction, New York, 9 October 1980, Lot 71 (described as an old copy after Albrecht Bouts). Sotheby's Auction, Milan, 17 November 2008, Lot 8 (described as in the style of Hans Memling, incorrectly listed as 19th century).

Note:
According to expert opinion the present painting probably is a 16th century copy of a painting of Albrecht Bouts (1451/55 - 1549) which had been painted between 1480 and 1485, of which a fragment is held in a Parisian private collection.

Literature:
Compare Max J. Friedlaender, Dieric Bouts and Joos van Gent, Leyden, Brussels 1968 (1925 reprint), p. 65, no. 45. Herein mentioned as being owned by the New York Historical Society (Bryan Collection).
Mentioned in Wolfgang Schöne, Dieric Bouts and his school, Berlin, Leipzig, 1938, p. 192.
