Links und rechts begrenzen Markusdom und Libreria Marciana den Markusplatz. Dieser steht so hoch unter Wasser, dass mehrere Gondeln bis an den Markusdom herangefahren sind. Die Wasserfläche spiegelt die Fassaden. In strahlendem Blau steht der Himmel über dem Aqua Alta in der Stadt.
Ziem hatte in den späten 1840er Jahren mehrfach Italien bereist und im Zuge dieser Reisen besonders Inspiration in Venedig gefunden. Im vorliegenden Gemälde gibt er mit der Aqua Alta-Darstellung eine besondere Situation in der Serenissima wieder.
