Giovanni Paolo Panini,
1691 Piacenza – 1765 Rome

ROMAN RUINS WITH ST PAUL PREACHING

Oil on canvas. Relined.
90 x 110 cm.

This unpublished painting is an important addition to the catalogue by Gian Paolo Panini. In this case the author not only painted the wonderful setting of classical ruins but also the many frieze-like characters developed horizontally on both sides of the apostle. St. Paul is theatrically in the middle of the foreground, standing on a plinth with grand and eloquent gestures. St. Paul is preaching and according to the sources this should have happened on the Aeropago hills in front of the Temple of Mars and the assembly of judges of Athen.
Panini sets it near the monumental remain of a Ionic Roman Temple. We can see a small crowd of soldiers, magistrates and common people, however the attention is particularly focused on the old man wearing the white tunic, the young one on the high pedestal with a pink toga and the soldier with the lance and the red beret on the right side of the painting. According to Ferdinando Arisi this red beret might be a sort of signature brand for Panini’s self portrait. We can indeed find it in two other canvases possibly dated as this one around 1725: the versions of Gesù tra i dottori which are in Fondazione Cariparma and The Prado in Madrid, and also in the Festino sotto un portico in Louvre Museum in Paris.
This canvas has a great quality both in the variety of attitudes and gestures of the small figures, and in the brightness of the sky despite the clouds. But what comes out the most is the architectural capriccio with a special attention to archeological details and the pictorial fluency. This painting, due to its free and fantastic creativeness (in a pre-piranesian way), togheter with a high perspectical virtuosism, can be associated to other masterpieces of the painter executed before the first half of the third decade of the 18th century, such as Resurrezione di Lazzaro in Nelahozeves Castle in Bohemia, Alessandro visita la tomba di Achille in The Accademia di San Luca in Rome, Predica di un apostolo tra rovine in The Louvre Museum.
