Anmerkung :
13 Gemälde seiner Hand befinden sich im Schloss von Versailles. Andere Gemälde befinden sich in der National Portrait Gallery, London.
Er lernte bei François de Troy und wurde 1703 Mitglied der Französischen Akademie. An den französischen Hof berufen war er als Hofmaler auch für den englischen König Jacob II. aus dem Hause Stewart tätig. Dazu musste er Frankreich nicht verlassen; vielmehr siedelte Jacob II. 1688 nach seiner Vertreibung nach London mit seinem ganzen Hofstaat nach Frankreich, wo ihm Ludwig XIV. das Königsschloss Saint-Germain-en-Laye zur Verfügung stellte.
Anmerkung II:
Dass es sich hier um einen britischen Aristokraten handelt, der noch nicht identifiziert ist, geht aus seiner Kleidung hervor. Dies und die Tatsache, dass Alexis- Simon Belle für den Hof in Saint-Germain-en-Laye tätig war, machen es wahrscheinlich, dass das große Repräsentationsportrait für das dortige Schloss bestimmt war.
