Grosz ist vor allem für seine scharf-kritische Beobachtung des Gesellschaftslebens der 20er-Jahre bekannt geworden, bevor er Deutschland verließ. Das Gemälde entstand in den Jahren seines Aufenthalts in den USA ab 1932, als er einen Lehrauftrag an der Arts Students League of New York erhielt. Neben Aktbildern malte Grosz in dieser Zeit eine Serie von apokalyptischen Szenerien und Landschaften, genannt „Images of Hell“, in denen eine Vorahnung der kommenden Katastrophen zu spüren ist. Das Gemälde ist in Zusammenhang mit weiteren Werken zu sehen, etwa dem Bild „Moonrise over Reeds“ desselben Jahres, sowie dem 1938 geschaffenen Werk „Apocalyptic Landscape“ zu sehen. 1939 entstand sein Aquarell „Cape Cod“. Grosz is best known for his sharply critical observation of social life in the 1920s before leaving Germany. The painting was created during his years in the USA from 1932, when he was given a teaching position at the Arts Students League of New York. In addition to nudes, Grosz painted a series of apocalyptic scenes and landscapes during this period, called Images of Hell, which convey a premonition of the catastrophes to come. The painting can be seen in connection with other works, such as Moonrise over Reeds from the same year and Apocalyptic Landscape created in 1938. In 1939 he created his watercolour Cape Cod (Sotheby’s N.Y. 1972).
