Die Heilige Maria Magdalena ist im Dreiviertelbildnis wiedergegeben, steht nach rechts vor einer aus mehreren Steinplatten aufeinanderliegenden Wand an einem Felsentisch und hält die Arme vor der Brust überkreuzt, während ihr langes Lockenhaar den nackten Oberkörper bedeckt. Der Blick ist demütig seitlich in die obere Ecke gerichtet, jedoch in nicht eindeutiger Weise. Auf dem Stein stehend das grausilberne Salbgefäß mit Deckel.
Das Gemälde weist, wie viele Maler im Kreis um und nach Leonardo da Vinci, auch dessen entsprechende stilistischen Merkmale auf. Auch gibt es Gemälde mit fast identischem Motiv, die die Zusammenarbeit beider Maler belegen, so das Werk der „Santa Maria Magdalena“, Öl auf Holz, ausgeführt 1515-1520 von Leonardo da Vinci und Rizzoli, das sich in der Kathedrale von Burgos, Spanien, befindet; bei diesem Werk blickt die Heilige jedoch nach oben aus dem Bild heraus.

Provenienz:
Laut Cristina Geddo, die das Gemälde 2009 veröffentlicht hat, wies ein früher auf der Rückseite der Tafel befindliches Etikett auf die Herkunft aus einer Gallerie eines Grafen in Mailand hin, das 1814-1820 zum Verkauf angeboten wurde.
Das hier vorliegende Gemälde wurde bei Christie´s New York am 30. Januar 2013 zur Versteigerung angeboten mit der Lot-Nr. 116.

Anmerkung:
Der Künstler war ein Maler der lombardischen Schule und des Leonardo-Kreises. Er hat zahlreiche Vorlagen Leonardos adaptiert, aber auch eigene Kompositionen hinterlassen. Viele Bilder sind in mehreren Fassungen erhalten geblieben.

Like many painters in the circle of Leonardi da Vinci and later followers, the painting also shows his respective stylistic features. There are also paintings with almost identical subjects that show the collaboration of the two painters, such as Saint Mary Magdalene, oil on panel, painted 1515 - 1520 by Leonardo da Vinci and Rizzoli in the Cathedral of Burgos, Spain; in this work, however, the Saint is looking up and out of the painting.

Provenance:
According to Cristina Geddo, who published the painting in 2009, a label formerly on the back of the panel indicated its provenance from a count’s gallery in Milan, put up for sale in 1814 - 1820. The present painting was offered for sale at Christie’s New York on 30 January 2013 under lot 116.
