Annibale Carracci,

Halb innen, halb ins Äußere verlagert stellt der Maler die Heilige Familie in den Mittelpunkt. Maria sitzt in einem reich gefälteten Gewand in den ihr traditionell zukommenden Farben nach rechts gewandt und hat das Christuskind, das aus dem Bildraum hinaus den Betrachter anblickt, auf ihrem Schoß. Zu den Seiten der zentralen Gruppe links der Johannesknabe mit Kreuz und Nimbus, rechts hinter einer Brüstung Josef, seinen Zeigefinger in ein Buch legend. Die Figuren werden hinterfangen von einer kannelierten Säule mit Repoussoirtuch und einer hügeligen Landschaft.
Annibale war Bruder des Agostino Carracci (1557-1602) und lernte bei seinem Cousin Ludovico Carracci (1555-1619) in Parma. Erst 1595 von Kardinal Farnese nach Rom berufen, kam er mit den Werken von Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) und Raffaello Santi (1483-1520) in engste Berührung.

Provenienz gemäß der Sammlungstradition:
Sammlung Carlo Maratti, 1625-1713 (ein Gemälde desselben Sujets ist als „Annibale Carracci“ im Inventar aufgeführt und wurde 1713 an die Tochter Faustina Maratti vererbt).
1722 an König Philipp V von Spanien verkauft (gemeinsam mit zahlreichen Werken der ehemaligen Sammlung Carlo Marattis).
Sammlung des Spanischen Königshauses (ehemals im Museo de Bilbao).
Versteigerung Alcala Subastas, Madrid, 9. Oktober 2013, Nr. 49.
Europäische Privatsammlung.

According to collection tradition: Carlo Maratti collection, 1625 - 1713 (a painting of the same subject is listed in the inventory as “Annibale Carracci“ and was inherited by Faustina Maratti’s daughter in 1713); sold to King Philip V of Spain in 1722 (together with numerous works from the former Carlo Maratti collection); collection of the Spanish royal family (formerly in the Museo de Bilbao); Auction Alcala Subastas, Madrid, 9 October 2013, no. 49; European private collection.
