Ganz ähnlich wie bei der Maria lactans von Giampietrino, die jedoch anstelle des Bücherregals den Heiligen Josef zeigt, ist auch hier Maria zentral im Bild zu sehen, ihr Kind stillend. Während das Gemälde in der Biblioteca di Castel Vitoni die Kopfbedeckung in gelbem Ton zeigt, ist das Tuch hier mauve und der Blick Mariae gleitet in unserem Bild sinnierend in die Zukunft aus dem Bildraum heraus, während das Vergleichsbild eine Kommunikationsmotivation zumindest vermuten lässt, die durch den dahinterstehenden Josef evoziert wird. Gut vergleichbar ist das Christuskind etwa mit der Maria lactans in der Galleria Borghese von Giampietrino. In der Ausführung wirkt unser Gemälde als könnte auch ein Nachfolger oder zumindest die Werkstatt an der Ausführung des Gemäldes beteiligt gewesen sein, während Mina Gregori das Gemälde in die Reifezeit Giampietrinos mit Andrea Solari (1460–1524) einordnet und somit den Werkzusammenhang mit Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519) betont.

Quite similar to the painting of the The Nursing Madonna by Giampietrino, which, by contrast, shows Saint Joseph instead of the bookshelf, the Virgin can also be seen at the centre of this painting, breastfeeding her child. While the painting held at the Biblioteca di Castel Vitoni shows the headgear in a yellow tone, the cloth here is mauve and the Virgin’s gaze is directed outside the pictorial space, reflecting on the future, while the comparative painting at least suggests a communication motivation, which is evoked by Joseph standing behind her. The figure of the Christ Child easily compares with The Nursing Madonna by Giampietrino at the Galleria Borghese. The execution of our painting looks as if a successor or at least the workshop could have been involved its execution, while Mina Gregori places the painting in Giampietrino’s mature oeuvre in collaboration with Andrea Solari (1460–1524) and thus emphasizes the work connection with Leonardo da Vinci (1452–1519).
