Sandguss. (1291141) (11)

Arsène Matton,

THE IVORY BEARERHeight: 102 cm.
Signed at base.

Large bronze figure showing a naked African slave shouldering an ivory tooth with both arms. His head is bent, his legs in step posture on an oval grass knoll plinth cast in one piece. The tooth is inserted into the figure in natural ivory. Considering the artist's origin, this sculpture is probably reminiscent of the Belgian colony in the Congo, whereby the artist is named as the first who created various sculptures on this subject for important monuments under King Leopold II. Between 1911 and 1937 he held the post of professor at the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels. In addition to this figure, scaled-down versions were also produced.
