YOUNG MAN IN ARMOUR (So called gaston de foix)Oil on canvas.
93 x 128 cm.
Inscibed upper right.

Only very few facts are known about this important artist’s life except that he as based in Florence from 1508 and in Venice from 1521 and was influenced by Giovanni Bellini and Giorgione, but also by Flemish masters. The painting, here, has been discussed in depth in specialist literature. Even though the secured original is held at the Louvre Paris (91 x 123 cm), acquired by King Francois I, which is now considered as a portrait of the French military commander Gaston de Foix (1489-1512) which also explains the armour it was identified as a self-portrait of Savoldo due to comparisons with other paintings prior to this. This is also why it has been interpreted as “Allegory of Painting”. According to the enclosed expert's report by Roberto Longhi (Florence, 1958 and 1959) the painting on offer for sale here is considered a very early copy by Michelangelo da Caravaggio, who according to the biographer Mancini painted copies in his early career. The expert's reports by Maurizio Marini, Rome (1973) and Didier Bodart (1970) support this opinion. Experts believe this to be one of the most original paintings by Savoldo, which is “looking for its equal in Italian painting” (G. Brucher). The obvious influence of Giorgione has also led to the theory that the painting on offer for sale here is based on a lost painting by Giorgione. It has been associated with Savoldo’s œuvre since 1863. Another painting also inscribed as “after Savoldo” of this bearded “young man in armour” painted as a section in the King’s Dressing Room, Windsor Castle, Royal Collection Trust (oil, 91 x 83.5. RCIN 405770.)
