Der antike Bau rötlich im Spätnachmittagslicht unter blauem Wolkenhimmel wiedergegeben. Im Vordergrund eine zum Eingang ziehende Pilgerprozession, ferner weitere Figurenstaffage. Links hinten am Bildrand Blick auf römische Wohnhäuser und weitere Ruinenarchitektur. Der Pilgerstrom im Vordergrund erklärt sich daraus, dass noch im 17. Jahrhundert das Kolosseum – ehemals Schauplatz des Christenmärtyrertums – als kirchlich geweihter Ort behandelt wurde. Dem entspricht auch das Kreuz und die Inschrifttafel oberhalb des Eingangs.
