Verso auf dem Keilrahmen ein altes Etikett aus dem 19. Jahrhundert, welches den Besitzer nach London und den Vorbesitzer bzw. den vorherigen Wohnort nach Edinburgh lokalisiert.

Beigegeben in Kopie eine Expertise von Alberto Savio, o. J., der die Zusammenarbeit von Carlo Maratti und Gaspard Dughet herausstellte. Dabei arbeitete Maratti an den Figuren, während Dughet die Landschaft malte.

Eine natürliche Felsbrücke, deren Seiten ein mächtiges Felsgebilde hält und vom vorderen Bildrand in den linken Hintergrund führt, sind mit reicher Vegetation gestaltet, welche, teils verschattet, das mythologische Geschehen überfangen. An einem durch Wasserstufen gestaffelten Felsbach, der von der rechten Seite durch einen kleinen Wasserfall gespeist wird, baden zahlreiche Nymphen, unter welchen Diana als Hauptperson, nicht nur durch ihre auf dem Haupt getragene Mondsichel, sondern auch durch ihre Größe und kompositionelle Bedeutung emporragt. Akteon, der noch im rechten Hintergrund zu sehen ist, wurde soeben von Diana mit dem Quellwasser bespritzt und somit in einen Hirschen verwandelt. Noch ist seine Verwandlung nicht als solche sichtbar, doch Diana scheint bereits soeben zu sagen „Nun sag, wenn du kannst, du habst mich nackt gesehen”, so berichtet Ovid.

Old 19th century label on the back of the stretcher, which identifies the location of the painting’s owner in London and Edinburgh prior to that.

A copy of the expert’s report by Alberto Savio, n.y. is enclosed, pointing out the collaboration between Carlo Maratti, who painted the figures in the painting on offer for sale in this lot and Gaspard Dughet, who painted its landscape.
