In einem Innenraum, dessen Kulisse in variierendem Steingrau gehalten ist und rückwärtig in einer weiten Rundbogenöffnung endet, hinter welcher sich eine weite Flusslandschaft erstreckt, thront Maria auf einer gülden scheinenden Thronkonstruktion. Diese wird überfangen von einem sehr großen und symmetrisch angelegten Baldachin in Kronenform mit goldener Fassung. Hierdurch nimmt der Maler das Thema des Gemäldes eindrücklich vorweg – denn unter dem Himmel wird Maria durch zwei seitlich angeordnete Engel bekrönt. Auf ihrem Schoß das Jesuskind mit einer Notenschrift (?), seitlich neben dem Thron zwei musizierende Engel. Coffermans war stets auf die symmetrische Anordnung bedacht – ob es eine Darstellung Maria mit dem Kinde (Bass Museum of Art, Miami, Inv. Nr. 63/19) oder eine Himmelfahrt Mariens (The Art Institute Chicago, Inv. 1984-17) betrifft. So nähme es nicht wunder, wenn nicht auch dieses Bild dem genannten Maler zuzuschreiben wäre. It is typical for Coffermans to aim for a symmetrical layout, regardless of whether it is a depiction of The Virgin and Christ Child (Bass Museum of Art, Miami, inv. no. 63/19) or The Ascension (The Art Institute Chicago, inv. no. 1984-17). It would therefore not be surprising if the painting on offer for sale here can also be attributed to this painter.
