Über die Lebensdaten des Künstlers ist kaum etwas bekannt, außer dass er der Neffe und Werkstattnachfolger des bekannten Luca Signorelli (um 1450-1523) war, der etwa die Fresken im Dom von Orvieto schuf. Ein Werk des Francesco, Madonna und Kind, befindet sich im Nationalmuseum Liverpool.

Die Zuweisung an den Künstler erfolgte durch eine Expertise von Dr. Alessandro Delpriori. In dessen gutachterlicher Dokumentation ist ein weiteres Werk des Francesco aufgeführt: Immacolata con Concezione in der Pinacoteca comunale di Gubbio, dessen Signatur den Malstil sichert und Rückschlüsse auf unser vorliegendes Werk zulässt. In der Expertise wird die vermutete Entstehungszeit um 1523 angenommen.
Das Gruppenbild der Heiligen Familie zeigt die Figuren dicht gedrängt, der Kontrast zwischen den hellfarbigen Inkarnatpartien und der dunkleren Wiedergabe der Gewänder tritt hier stark hervor. Auch die gedrehte Haltung des Jesuskindes weist bereits auf die Tendenzen des Manierismus. (1200989) (11)

An expert’s report by Dr Alessandro Delpriori attributes the painting to the artist. His report lists a further work by Signorelli, Feast of the Immaculate Conception held at the Pinacoteca comunale di Gubbio, whose signature ascertains the painting style and allows to draw conclusions regarding the work on offer for sale in this lot. The report suggests that the painting was created ca. 1523.
