Das Gemälde betont hochformatig, der Heilige als schlanker Knabe gezeigt, mit entblößtem Oberkörper, lediglich mit einem braunen Manteltuch mit Fellsaum bekleidet. Er blickt, wie von einer überirdischen Berufung ergriffen, nach links oben, während er die rechte Hand an die Brust legt. Der Lichteinfall ebenfalls von links oben, betont Gesicht und Oberkörper, aber auch noch die linke Hand, die einen Kreuzstab mit daran gebundenem Rotolus hält. An der rechten Hüfte eine Kürbisflasche, Symbol der Tauftätigkeit des Heiligen. Die Figur vor dunklem, nach rechts sich aufhellendem Hintergrund. Das Gemälde von hoher künstlerischer wie malerischer Qualität, zeigt deutlich den Stileinfluss des in Neapel wirkenden Giuseppe José de Ribera (1588/91-1652). (1201153) (130800) (11)
