Auf dem gemauerten, flachen oberen Ende eines Rundbogens sitzend ein bärtiger Mann mit Weste, Hut und in seiner linken Hand einen langen Stock haltend, mit nach rechts gewandtem Kopf. Hinter ihm die unendliche Weite der Campagnalandschaft in einem grau-blauen Farbenmeer, mit Bäumen bewachsener grüner Bergkuppe mit großer Burgruine. Der Himmel nimmt fast zweidrittel des Gemäldes ein und strahlt in einer Farbenvielfalt, die von einem gelben Farbton am unteren Horizont über rötlich und hellblau, dazu weiße Wolken, bis zum dunkleren Blau am oberen Horizontrand übergeht. Pracht- und stimmungsvolles, harmonisches Gemälde in qualitävoller Manier.

Studierte an der Münchner sowie an der Düsseldorfer Akademie unter Achenbach, Lessing und Schirmer. Nach zahreichen Reisen ließ er sich ab 1864 dauernd in München nieder, wo er regelmäßig im Kunstverein ausstellte. Viele seiner Werke sind nach Amerika gekommen, andere befinden sich in zahlreichen öffentlichen Einrichtungen wie Hannover, Provinzial-Museum, Sammlung Castell Wiesbaden oder Kunstverein für Rheinland und Westfalen.

Monogrammed in ligature, with place name and date “GJC Roma 1857” on lower left.
In magnificent gilt frame.

A bearded man, his head turned to the right is sitting on the flat top of a built round arch. He is dressed in a waistcoat and a hat and is holding a long stick in his left hand. The infinite landscape of the Campagna is stretching out behind him. Magnificent, atmospheric and harmonious painting in high-quality manner.
