Höchst originelle und interessante Darstellung eines halbnackt nach links gerichteten Mannes mit Lippen- und Kinnbart, schelmischem Blick und Lorbeerkranz im Haar. Den linken Zeigefinger an den Mund gelegt, in der rechten Hand eine Kugel, als Attribut des Philosophen. Bei der Darstellung handelt es sich möglicherweise um ein Selbstbildnis des Mathias Schmid, der sich in der Signatur mit dem Vornamen Hiesel (=Mathias) bezeichnet. Die Darstellung geht wohl auf ein Künstlerfest im Sinne der Malerfeste in der Villa Lehnbach zurück, im Kreis der Maler Wilhelm von Kaulbach (1804-1874) und Franz von Stuck (1863-1928). A.R.
