Durch mehrere Gutachten ist die eine Zuweisung an Bartomolé Esteban Murillo (1618-1682) erfolgt, die dem Gemälde beigegeben sind: Pietro Zampetti, Ancona, 10. Februar 1999., Prof. Giuseppe Maria Pilo, Venedig, 29. Juni 1999., Mina Gregori, Florenz, 28. Juni 2009. Sowie undatiert: Ferdinando Arisi. In den genannten Gutachten werden ausführlich Vergleichsbeispiele in öffentlichen Sammlungen und im Gesamtwerk des Künstlers genannt.

Der Heilige Josef ist in braunem Gewand vor dunklem, ebenso ins Braun ziehenden Hintergrund dargestellt, während er im linken Arm das nackt auf einem weißen Tuch sitzende Jesuskind hält. Der Oberkörper durch die rechte Hand Josefs gehalten, doch hat der Maler in nahezu heiliger Distanz das weiße Tuch zwischen Hand und Körper des Kindes gelegt. Die linke Hand Josefs, weitgehend verschattet wiedergegeben, berührt nur mit zwei Fingern das rechte Füßchen des Jesusknäbleins als sensible Geste, von künstlerisch hoch durchdachtem Einfall. Die Blicke von Jesuskind und dem Ziehvater begegnen sich, wobei auch hier im Blick Josefs eine würdevolle Distanzierung zu erkennen ist, bedingt durch die Rolle der biblischen Figur. Das Jesuskind hält in der linken Hand das Attribut des Heiligen, einen Lilienstengel, während das rechte Händchen eine davon abgebrochene Blüte dem Ziehvater entgegen hält. All diese sensiblen Bildideen zeugen von großartiger Inspriation des Künstlers. Vom Standpunkt des Malerischen ist deutlich zu erkennen, dass dem Kind durch Beleuchtung eine größere Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet ist, während das schräg stehende Haupt Josefs sowie seine Hand nur partiell Beleuchtung erhält.
