Landschaft und Szenerien aus der Kavalierperspektive aufgefasst, mit Blick auf einen von rechts unten zur Mitte in die Ferne ziehenden Kanal mit befestigtem Oberufer und gegenüberliegenden Gebäuden und dazwischen stehenden Mauern. Weiter im Hintergrund nach rechts hochziehende Anhöhen. Links im Bild die nahe dem Ufer stehenden Gebäude eines Städtchens, dessen Kirchturm links hinten über die Dächer emporragt, vom Licht beschienen. In den Uferpartien reges Treiben von Fischern und Händlern sowie Arbeitern beim Be- und Entladen der Kähne und Hausboote. Die Szenerie insgesamt in helles diesiges Licht gestellt, mit darüber hochziehendem, von links beleuchtetem Wolkenhimmel. Bildauffassung und Komposition stehen in enger Beziehung zu einem bei Sotheby's London am 10. April 2013 (Lot 24) verauktionierten Gemälde "Landscape with a barge being towed along a canal" von 1683. The imagery and composition are closely linked with a painting sold at auction at Sotheby's London on 10 April 2013 (lot 24) with the title Landscape with a Barge being towed along a canal dated 1683.
