Der Künstler zunächst geschult bei Herrmann Kauffmann (1808-1889) in Hamburg, danach an der Gewerbe- und Zeichenschule in Hanau sowie in Antwerpen und Paris, wo er bei Thomas Couture (1815-1879) studierte.
Auf vorliegendem Gemälde eine Schulkasse: Knaben und Mädchen unterschiedlichen Alters stürmen eine gebogene Treppe herab. Der noch oben stehende Lehrer blickt besorgt und kritisch auf einen ausgelassenen Knaben, der übermütig seine Schulhefte als Spielball missbraucht. Das Gemälde ist ein markantes Beispiel für das Interesse der Genremalerei des 19. Jahrhunderts an der Psychologie menschlicher Stimmungen, hier der unterschiedlichen Reaktionen der Kinder nach dem Unterricht. Höchst qualitätvolle Feinmalerei. (1110909) (11)
