† (1100061) (10)

STILL LIFE WITH CHERRY BASKET, 1880

Oil on canvas.
25 x 35 cm.
Dated lower right.

Accompanied by an expert's report by Yann le Pichon dated 25 June 2010.

The focal point of the picture is a basket filled to the brim with fruit and depicted slightly off centre to the left on a tabletop in the background leaving plenty of space for individually scattered fruit in the foreground. Effectively set against a dark background, these scattered cherries and red, white and black currants are painted next to each other, disregarding any rules of perspective or overlapping.
This leading exponent of Primitivism shows his great skill as a colourist. Rousseau was a late convert to painting, rejected by his fellow Academic colleagues but exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants. He was in contact with Robert Delaunay (1885-1941), Paul Signac (1863-1935), Guillaume Apollinaire (1880-1918) and Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) among others, who admired him for his naïve authenticity, his imagination and his talent as a colourist. He was one of the first artists to develop a naïve painting style that would impact on Surrealism. †
