Dieses schöne Holzgemälde - eventuell handelte es sich hierbei um einen kleinformatigen Flügel des Altars einer Privatkapelle - zeigt unten links die typische Unterschrift von Marco Palmezzano, die wir auch von vielen anderen seiner Werke kennen, die der Künstler ebenfalls datierte und signierte, um so voll Stolz auf seine Heimatstadt in der Romagna hinzuweisen. Leider ist der Schriftzug heute nicht mehr vollständig lesbar, so dass man die genaue Datierung nicht mehr erkennen kann; zumindest ist jedoch erkennbar, dass es sich um ein Werk handelt, dass im 16. Jahrhundert entstand, was die stilistischen Merkmale darüberhinaus bestätigen. Das Gemälde entspricht somit genau dem einfachen, jedoch eleganten Stil der Spätwerke von Palmezzano, worauf besonders die zarte, an die des Veneto erinnernde Landschaft und die - nur angedeuteten - klassischen Bauwerke sowie die im Schaffen dieses Künstlers immer wiederkehrenden Gesichter verweisen. Zum Vergleich sei hier an die „Natività“ in der Pinacoteca di Brera in Mailand, die Anbetung durch die Könige in der Collegiata von Brisighella und die „Natività“ im Musée de Grenoble von 1530 erinnert. This beautiful panel painting, which may have been the wing of a small format altarpiece in a private chapel, has Marco Palmezzano’s typical signature in the lower left. The simple yet elegant style is also characteristic of his late work. The gentle landscape recalling the Veneto region, the classical buildings that are only being hinted at and the depiction of faces that frequently appear throughout the artist’s oeuvre are especially indicative of Palmezzano’s hand. The Nativity at the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan, the Adoration of the Magi at the Collegiata of Brisighella and the Nativity at the Musée de Grenoble dated 1530 come to mind as particularly comparable examples.
