Die Figur des Trovatore gehört zu den bedeutendsten und bekanntesten Bilderfindungen von Giorgio de Chirico. In ihr verkörpert sich der Künstler selbst als melancholischer Dichter in einer rätselhaften Welt. Die gesichtslose Figur ist komponiert aus unterschiedlichen Elementen wie geometrischen keulenartigen Formen und durchbrochenen polygonalen Scheiben. Dunkle durchbrochene Linien ziehen sich über Gesicht und Beine und Formen auf Lungenflügeln und auf Höhe des Herzens kleine Wirbel. Neben der im Zentrum stolz und aufrecht stehenden Figur wirft eine zweite Person ihren Schatten links in das Bild. Ihre Identität bleibt unklar. Der weite ansonsten leere Platz wird links von einem klassisch italienischen Gebäude begrenzt. Im Dämmerhorizont des rechten Hintergrundes erhebt sich ein Turm mit einzelnem Fenster. Diese Unterordnung der Umgebung und die weite Leere verleiht dem „Trovatore“ Monumentalität. Seit den 1910er Jahren hat sich de Chirico immer wieder mit diesem Bildthema auseinandergesetzt. Beeinflusst wurde er hierbei durch das Theaterstück „Les chants de la mi-mort“ seines Bruders Alberto Savinio, das im Sommer 1914 in Guillaume Apollinaires Magazin „Les soirées de Pari“ veröffentlicht wurde. Der Protagonist des Stücks ist ein Mann ohne Stimme oder Augen. De Chirico selbst bestätigte, dass er sich für den Trovatore durch das Drama beeinflussen ließ. Das Bildthema beschäftigte de Chirico im Laufe seiner Karriere immer wieder, so ist die vorliegende Arbeit in der zweiten Hälfte der 1950er Jahre entstanden.

IL TROVATORE [THE TROUBADOUR]

The trovatore figure is one of de Chirico's most famous pictorial inventions. It represents the artist himself as a melancholic poet in a mysterious world. The faceless figure is composed of different elements such as geometric or club-shaped forms and open-work polygonal discs. Dark, broken lines run across his face and legs, swirling over his body where the lungs and heart are located. Apart from this figure, standing erect and proud at the centre of the composition, the shadow of a second person is visible on the left but their identity remains unknown. The wide and otherwise deserted square is bordered on the left by a classical Italian building. In the background to the right is a twilit horizon and a tower with a few windows. The subordination of the simplified surroundings and the feeling of emptiness in the composition lend Il Trovatore a sense of monumentality. De Chirico explored this subject repeatedly since the 1910s. He was inspired by his brother Alberto Savinio's play Les chants de la mi-mort, which was published in the summer of 1914 in Guillaume Apollinaire's magazine Les soirées de Paris. The main protagonist is a man without a voice or eyes and de Chirico himself confirmed the influence this play had on his Trovatore. The present work was executed in the second half of the 1950s.
