An der Rundblende signiert mit sechszeiliger vom Künstler selbst gravierter Aufschrift: „P. Romanelli / gave to benefit / the wounded / Americans in the War of America´s / Liberty and Unity“.
19. Jahrhundert.
Für die Geschichte der USA bedeutende Marmorfigur eines, neben einem schlanken Baumstamm kauernden Amorknaben, der die Hände an das Tuch über seine Brust gelegt hat und nach oben blickt. Die Figur auf runder Blende, gesockelt auf hohem runden Säulenstumpf in stark geädertem weißen Marmor mit quadratischer Sockelplatte und kräftigen Hohlkehlen. Rest., besch. und Chips.
Der Inschrift gemäß ist die Figur dem amerikanischen Volk nach den Befreiungskriegen gewidmet. Der Bildhauer Romanelli, Schüler von Lorenzo Bartolini, dessen Atelier er nach dessen Tod übernahm, stellte 1854 in New York aus. Möglicherweise kann es sich bei der vorliegenden Figur um das Ausstellungsexponat handeln. Der Bildhauer hatte sich dem Thema wohl aus deshalb gewidmet, weil er selbst während der Jahre 1848/49 in der Gruppe Giovine Italia als Revolutionär für die Befreiung Italiens von Österreich gekämpft hatte. Romanelli schuf zahlreiche bedeutende Denkmäler in Italien, davon einige von König Vittorio Emanuele erworben. (1070927) (11)
